Afghan School Site Selected
Hopeful Hearts announced last month the opening of a new school for street children in Kabul, Afghanistan. The project is well under way and final preparations are being made for our grand opening in March 2009. School teachers and staff are already in place and anxiously awaiting the arrival of 100 children in March 2009. This school will provide an education opportunity for approximately 100 children. HopefulHearts Foundation held its 7th annual fundraising dinner on February 14, 2009. Over 330 people attended the event, “An Evening of Loving Hearts.” The event has become a Louisville tradition for celebrating Valentine’s day with dinner, dance, and silent auction. The dinner is Hopeful Hearts’ primary fundraiser throughout the year and proceeds support orphan and abandoned children in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and India. Hopeful Hearts in 2008 opened its third transition home in Ukraine. The first two homes were for girls, but this one was for the boys. The three transition homes help prevent children from living on the streets by housing selected children who have “graduated” from a traditional orphanage. Although “graduation” typically occurs before age 17, orphan children are often released to the streets at much younger ages. Over 1000 orphan children at a refugee camp in Afghanistan last December received a token of hope and love from America: a small blessing bag along with a warm coat, new shoes, socks, a hat, and gloves to keep warm during the cold winter. Many children in Afghanistan live in refugee camps. Children in these settings often have nothing to call their own — not even the clothing they wear.
